Getting caught up...

My life, for the last nine months has been a pretty strange ride. I won't go into great detail, but after not having a job for a long time, I finally found one. Walmart. Not the best in the world, but I enjoyed it. But then I was offered a job with my former employer for pretty much what I was making before, and closer to home.

So after needing a job, now I have an extra one.

But with working, I'm exhausted. I'm still here though. I'm still reading, but my commenting has dropped to near nothing and my posting here, and at 1988 Donruss has been absent for a few days over a month now.

Well, it's time to get caught up, both here and at 88 Donruss.

We'll start here.

Three packages have come in filled with '09 Topps series 2 from Andy, GCRL and Howard.

With all the help I've gotten in these three packages, I'm only needing 13 cards to complete the set! Here's my current want list.

Just because I'm only going to post one doesn't mean that they weren't all greatly appreciated. They were.

But one card in particular jumped out at me. This has to be one of the most interesting shots in the set.


I think maybe this should have been a horizontally oriented picture just based on the cloud formations. But I don't know. Whatever it is, it's an interesting looking card.

Thanks a lot guys. It's been a while since I've written and I feel bad because I miss it. Hopefully this'll get me jumpstarted again.

Another box of Series Two Cereal...

Series Two O's.

Are all the series 2 boxes Lou Gherig? This'll be the third one I've bought and all three have been Lou.

So with two cereal boxes, five packs and a blaster, I'm 51% through the set. So let's see how I do with this one. I've only pulled a handful of Braves too. Only one from the first cereal box, and I think Chipper was the only one in the second... maybe this one'll be a bit better.

Before I begin, I should preface this by adding that I am substantially drunk, so any typos, I'll try to fix in the morning.

Again, I won't list all the cards because that would be boring...


I don't like Derek Jeter. I'm sorry, but I don't. I hate the Yankees, and I really just don't like Jeter. I do like him a lot more than Alex Rodriguez, who I disliked long before he was a Yankee, but sorry Jeter fans... he's just not for me.

But this is a great looking card. I can't get over how well Topps did with their photography this year. It's not as good all the way around as 1988 Score, but it's pretty damn close.


This is a nice action shot. But what I really want to point out here is the guy talking on his cellphone at a baseball game.

I have a cellphone, and I probably couldn't live without it since I don't have a landline. But I hate being around people who can't get off the damn things no matter where they are. If you're walking around downtown or in a store you don't need to be talking on the phone. People don't want to hear your conversations and it doesn't make you look cool to strut along with a phone in your ear. It didn't look cool 15 years ago when very few people had cellphones and it sure as hell doesn't look cool now that everyone has one.

And guess what, guy on a phone at a Rockies game? Now you're going to be the jackass that everyone who collects baseball cards will remember as the guy on the phone.

Hang the fucking thing up and watch the game. He's probably one of those assholes who sits on his phone the entire game talking to someone who's watching the game on TV.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system...


I'm not sure if I like this card or not. There's a lot of great action going on, and I really like how the ball is almost in perfect focus. But it's just a strange position to find a pitcher in at any time during a game. I'm guessing he's fielding a bunt and throwing off balance to first... or jumping a hurdle as he runs across the field.

It would be a great shot if the ball was the focal point of the photo, instead of the strained look on his face.

And now, the best card in the box (assuming the refractor isn't Ripken)...


Maddux in an awesome throwback jersey. You can't ask for much better.

This wasn't a bad box at all, very few doubles. But there was one damaged card and fortunately I already had it, so I can't complain about that.

Now the refractor...


Pretty spiffy. I've got Bob Gibson, Ty Cobb and now Cy Young.

Any doubles that I got out of the box will be up on my for trade list in the morning.

Series Two Cereal anyone?

I was in Wal Mart, and I said I wasn't going to buy any more retail packs, and I didn't. But I did pick two boxes of Lou Gherig O's. $10 and unsearchable, it's a good deal.


Looks tasty. Let's hope so.

I won't list every card because that would be boring.


On first glance this is a pretty cool looking card. But then you notice that Carlos is just as worried about his hat coming off as he is about catching the ball.


The ONLY Brave in the box and a sweet, sweet looking swing. I just wish he was using that sweet swing to actually hit the a little more than he's doing.


This DOES NOT look real. It looks like a screencap from a video game.


Any Rockies fans out there want this? Let me know.

So nothing spectacular, but I only got seven doubles. So I'm a lot happier than those retail packs.

2009 Topps Series 2... what the f***

So I posted a few days ago about how I got my hands on a blaster of Series 2. Well, tonight I finally found some retail packs and bought five.

When you take out all the inserts and Topps Town cards from the blaster, I got 63 total base cards. No doubles. Over all, a pretty successful blaster, though I wish the Topps Town cards weren't one of the eight in the blaster packs.

Tonight out of five packs, which is a total of 55 possible cards (taking out the five Topps Town cards), I got sixteen doubles from five packs. SIXTEEN FUCKING DOUBLES. What the hell is up with that? I got my fair share of doubles from Series 1, but not like this. The first pack I ripped had six doubles alone.

One of the 16 I'm holding on to one for a certain Phillies fan, but the others are up on my 2009 Topps for trade list. First come first serve... I'd prefer if you email me, rather than post a comment. My email is in my profile.

I'm looking for '89 Bowman, '09 Heritage or Turkey Red Braves or '81 Topps.

All was not lost though, I got some pretty nice inserts...


I really like Turkey Red, but I just don't see myself being able to complete this set. So this one is up on the trading block too, if any Orioles fan wants it, let me know.

2009 Topps Series 2 blaster

YAY, finally found series 2. Now I know blasters aren't as economical as retail packs, but there were five packs left and every one of them had been opened and searched. So this time, I'll settle for less cards just to know they haven't been searched.

I wonder what the patch will be. With my luck it'll be fuckin' Alex Rodriguez or Manny. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Christy Mathewson, Lou Gherig, Jackie Robinson or Tony Gwynn. If it has to be one of the current players, maybe it'll be Chipper.

Now I've gotta go put these cards in order and see if I got any doubles. If I did, I'll throw them up on my '09 Topps doubles list for anyone who's interested.

2009 Topps Series 1: The end.

Yesterday the final three cards I needed to complete '09 Topps Series 1 came in. The cards came from Kris of Free Fantasy Baseball Magazine. I didn't realize that the cards were coming from Canada, and there was another nice surprise included. We've all seen the cards, so I'll show the other thing.


It's a nifty program/schedule/brochure/thingy from the '09 World Baseball Classic that Kris picked up at one of the games. I watched a lot of the '09 Classic and really enjoyed it, so this is a nice little treat.

I didn't get to see much of the '06 Classic because I never could catch the games on TV. I've been interested in international baseball since going to a game at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta (where I got to see a very young Kosuke Fukudome play for Japan).


There's the schedule for round one. On the other side is the schedule for the rest of the tournament and on the inside is a seating chart for the Rogers Center... SkyDome.

So I'd like to thank Kris for finishing my set and for the WBC schedule thingy. Now I can concentrate on '89 Bowman and maybe '09 Heritage while I wait for Series 2.

Mail Day: '09 Topps down to three, and two unexpected cards.

Three of the final six '09 Topps I needed came today by way of Jeff at Card Junkie. I'm thinking this is at least the fifth trade we've made and they've all been wonderful. As I'm sure you all know, he's another one of the good guys to trade with.

Here's three of the final six. Now I only need 41, 100, 330.


My parents also came up for a visit today and my mom brought a tin of cards that she found in my closet. In side was an unexpected find.


1990 Upper Deck #65 - The Steve Avery collection is now upto 14 cards. I'd forgotten all about this card. It was still in a top loader and I'm not sure why it wasn't with the rest of my cards when I dug them all up last summer. But I won't complain.

Also in the little box was a card that I need to complete my '88 Revco League Leaders set. Yes, I'm still chasing down a 20 year old drug store odd ball set. But it's a nice little set. I only need the McGwire to finish it. I'll probably tack that onto my next SportLots order.

Mailday: In Purple I'm Stunning

Today a package showed up from Howard from In Purple I'm Stunning with a stack of '09 Topps and one of the few '87s I'm still missing.  At the rate I'm going, I'll be finished with 2009 Topps before 1987.

I want to thank Howard, and go check out his site, it's pretty interesting and a fun read.

Now to look at some cards.

We'll start with this 1987 Frank Tanana.


Here we see Tanana as a member of the Detroit Tigers, his last lengthy stop in the Majors (he split the final year of his career between the two New York teams).  The background isn't what it could be, but I think this is one of the better posed shots in the set.  There's not a hint of airbrushing and we see one of the better uniforms of the era.  I'm actually a bit surprised that with all the crazy uniforms of the 70s and 80s that the Tigers didn't break down and wear orange and black striped uniforms.

For whatever reason, I don't have much luck scanning 87 Topps cards on my new scanner. I guess I still haven't learned the finer points of modern scanner technology.

Up next is the last Braves card I need from '09 Series 1, Bobby Cox.


I'll be a sad day when Bobby retires and I can't really think of another manager out there who is as well respected by everyone. Players have had disagreements and have said bad things about Torre and LaRussa, but I've never heard a bad word from a player about Bobby Cox.

Hopefully the Braves can give him at least one more winning season before the end.

Cox is, of course, currently the longest serving manager with one team (since 1990, but had spent time in Atlanta before). Behind him is LaRussa who's been in St. Louis since 1996. What I didn't realize is that after LaRussa, the longest tenured manager currently serving is Mike Scioscia of the California Angels, who will be beginning his tenth season at the helm in April.

It seems like a lot of teams have a new manager every several seasons. So are guys like Cox and LaRussa a dying breed? I hope not, because to win a team needs stability at the top and a new manager every three seasons doesn't lend itself well to stability.

And while I'm thinking about it, aside from the foil and specks of dust, see how much better the 09 scanned than the 87. Probably the glossy finish.

I guess that's about it for now. I'd like to thank Howard again for the great help in completing '09 Topps. With these and four more that should be on their way to me soon, I'll be down to six.

and several more in the mail on the way to me.  When the incoming package arrives, I'll be 10 cards away from completing '09 Topps.  And with no Heritage in sight, looks kinda like I'll be stuck until May for new cards.

Fat Rat sent another two envelopes of cards that came today, that puts me at 299 cards.  Included was Jo Jo Reyes, which according to Dayf's checklist was one of two Braves I need to have the team set from Series 1.  The remaining Brave is #17 Bobby Cox, and it looks like that one is on the way to me as I write this.  YAY.

I've been giving some thought lately to trying to put together some Braves team sets from over the years.  Maybe start with 1988 and work my back and forward from there.  But that's another post for another day, and now that I've got some time on my hands, I'll probably start digging through doubles tonight.

No picture for this post.  Oh well.  There will be something to look at later.

Mailday 2009 Topps

Jeff, the Card Junkie sent along eight more 2009 Topps that I need.  I've received several emails over the past few days with more cards that should be coming in soon.  Once all those are in,  I think I'll be down to needing ten cards to complete the set!

Since we've all been beaten to death with '09 Topps, I'm only going to share one card.


Things are looking much more hopeful in Atlanta this year. At the same time, last year's team looked excellent, on paper, and we all know how that turned out.

Barring any unforseen tragedy, this year's starting rotation looks like it's going to be able to eat up a lot of innings and hopefully save some wear and tear on the bullpen. If the starters can hang in there for seven innings, and if Soriano and Gonzo stay healthy the bullpen will be great too.

And let's not forget about Tommy Hanson waiting in the wings. He looks close to ready for the big club. I'd like to see him start the season in Triple-A just to get a little more work in so he's ready if something happens to one of the starters. He's still young, there's no sense in working him too hard too soon. But hopefully the Braves learned their lesson after what happened with Steve Avery's career. But Hanson's two years older than Avery was when he was called up. Two extra years of maturity and experience.

Since pitching looks fairly solid for the first time in a few years, my only real concern lies in their ability to score runs. McCann is still young and I'm sure his power numbers will increase, but catcher is such a taxing position it's a bad idea to rely on him for all the production. If Chipper can avoid any lengthy time on the DL he's still able to provide some offense. The question is the outfield.

Garret Anderson should be a nice addition to the outfield. He's been a great hitter over his career. But someone's going to have to drive him in when he gets on base. Jeff Francoeur is still a big question mark out there. He's been tinkering with his stance and all indications are that he's feeling better about his swing than he did last year. But he's vital. If he fails to pick up baserunners it's going to be a challenge to win.

Centerfield is going to be interesting to watch as the Braves don't really have a typical centerfielder any more. Whoever starts is going to have to cover a lot of gruond because neither Anderson or Frenchy are speedy.

I think the Braves have a chance to compete this year. They're certainly a lot better than they were last year. It would be wonderful, but I don't see them winning the division. And since the Mets and Phillies are both looking good, the NL Wildcard may be out of Atlanta's range.

But who knows. Look at what they did in 1991. Hopefully I won't have to make as many "What's going on in Atlanta" posts this year.

Mailday '81 and '09 Topps

Fat Rat Phillies Fan sent over a few more '09 Topps that I needed and three more '81 Topps.  Most of my '09 extras have been going his way, so go check out his want lists if you haven't already, he's a great guy to trade with.

I'm now sitting at close to 80% through '09 Series 1. I'm half tempted to go buy one of the cereal boxes, now that I know what they are. However, I'm going to stay the hell away from the Wal Mart blasters. Sure, the black cards look pretty nice, but I don't like the underhanded way they released them on us. But there's plenty of talk of that around the blogs, so I won't say any more.

I do want to show this wonderful Mike Schmidt that John sent.


This is one of those cards that I'd kinda like to know what was going on. Schmidt looks a little annoyed at something or someone. It's also one of four cards in the set directly featuring Schmidt. I wonder if he shows up in the backgrounds of many others.

I also hadn't realized that the All Star cards weren't a subset like they were in later years.

Finally, we need to look at this pretty nice looking shot of Bob Boone blocking the plate.


I've said many times how much I like cards of catcher's in full gear and this one is particularly nice (especially given some of Topps' less than wonderful photography in that era).

Any idea what team they're playing against? Who wore a powder blue pinstriped away jersey in '81? I guess I'll have to go diggin'.

With these cards today, I now have 261 of 330 '09 Topps, and 151 of 726 '81s. Thanks John!

Looks like Capewood beat me by a few hours in posting the 1981 Topps Mike Schmidt. Oh well.

Cards at Wal-Mart part 4

Well... I knew it was too soon to put up a want list for '09 Topps.

I swung by Wal Mart on the way home got my $2.11 cents back, stopped by the card section and what do I find? Jumbo packs. So I bought two.


At least I remembered to also buy my Mountain Dew... er... Mtn Dew... what the hell. I guess the economy has gotten so bad Pepsi can't afford the oun-ai. Oh well, it's still caffeinated goodness.

Oh holy jumping jesus fish! Those two jumbo packs SUCKED! I added 17 SEVENTEEN!!! cards to my set. One more Turkey Red and one more Legends of the Game. Wow, I'm depressed.

At least my Mountain Mtn Dew was good.

Ok, so I'm done ripping packs for a while now. At least until Heritage comes out.

Looking back on it, it was kinda satisfying to slice A-Rod in half with a knife to get to the cards inside. I guess I should be thankful that my knife didn't crumble the second it made contact with his steroid enhanced muscles.

Finally got my hands on some '09 Topps

Well, if I had just waited two days I could have gotten some '09 Topps without all the excitement of my previous trip to Wal Mart.

I've been reading on various blogs that people are finding '09 Upper Deck at Wal Mart. Since I was off today and needed to run some errands (ie. get gas and take out the trash) I figured I'd go see if I could pick up some new UD.

Turns out the local Wal Mart didn't have UD, but they did have Topps. Woohoo, that's what I was really after, so I bought five packs. I'll open these a pack at a time and post some scans.

Also in the mail when I got home was another surprise, but that's a post for later this afternoon.

49 Kazuo Matsui - So far this is the best picture. His face says it all: "Oh god, my bat just hit an old lady in the teeth."

First impression: Pretty good. In terms of design, these are infinitely better than '08's. The photography is vastly superior. I've still got mixed feelings about '09 UD, so we'll have to wait until I get my hands on a few packs of that, but I think '09 base Topps is going to be my set for the year (maybe Heritage as well, we'll see when it comes).

They didn't over use foil on the front. The design reminds me a bit of a combination of the 1987 and 1994 Topps sets.

The back of the cards are actually interesting and easy to read. I like the little trivia facts above the player's name. The "6 Degrees of Mantle" reminds me of the Oracle of Baseball at Baseball Reference.

Thus far I can't really many any decision. We'll see how I feel after a few more packs.
